Lucy giggled like a child in the back of the police department cruiser.

“I hope you’ve had enough to drink,” said the cop with an amusing smile.

“Actually,” Lucy said, trying to stop her incessant chuckles, “I’m laughing because this is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. And there was no alcohol involved.”

“Right,” the blue-eyed cop said, smiling at her through the rearview mirror.

He didn’t believe her, but he hadn’t given her a breathalyzer, either. Another reason for Lucy to laugh. The cop probably thought she was just another drugged, drunk, crazy ex-girlfriend.

Could she blame him after what she had done?

Lucy had torn all of Matt’s brand-new furniture with a pocket knife, including the fifteen-thousand-dollar mahogany leather couch. “Oh, my God,” she thought, still laughing. She wished she could have seen Matt’s face when he saw the couch. Also, what would he look like when he found out she had given away Toby, the ten-year Labrador they had raised together?

Toby now belonged to her compassionate friends from the animal sanctuary. And there was nothing Matt could do about it. As her hysterical laughs retreated, Lucy took a deep breath of relief. Toby would now be free from all the…
