Overcoming Limiting Beliefs from Those Who Have Influenced Us
I once told an old friend, a mother of two, to be careful about what she says to her children. “Words simply stay,” I told her. Maybe it’s easier said than done, I thought. As a childfree woman, I don’t have to be as cautious about the impact of my words. However, if you have young children or teenagers, choosing your words carefully is crucial.
To prove my point, I’ll take you on a short journey to my 17-year-old self’s favorite geography class. I had this amazing teacher who all students loved. He was for sure a role model in my life. He had amazing critical thinking skills and taught us how to find the answers to the world’s most complicated economic and political issues ourselves. Most of us aced his quizzes because learning was fun.
One day, during class time, we were all discussing future careers. All the students asked our teacher (let’s call him Mr. V.) for his views on our career choices. He then would tell us about salaries, job availability, relocation to major areas, etc. Where I come from, you must choose your major before entering a university.
